Why I am here?
First things first. To live in the Netherlands, I needed to register with the Amsterdam municipality (gemeente) to receive my citizen service number, or BSN (burgerservicenummer). Basically, it establishes residency, and allows me to open a bank account, have healthcare and liability insurance, get utilities…and more. Social Security—on steroids!
I biked to the city government building for the appointment with some trepidation. But have no fear—I was met with smiles, encouragement, and helpfulness. I was shown to a cubicle with living plants forming the screens between the workers. Living plants! I chatted with the official helping me about why an American would want to live here when everyone else in the world wants to live in America. We shared stories and laughter, and in the end, I am now an official resident. I was directed to the volunteers in the front office (thank you Anne!) and they explained healthcare, how to import a car, and the best organizations to join.
Then I was handed a tote bag with goodies welcoming me—to being Dutch. The rubber duckie stood out, along with a key chain with the traditional Dutch klomp, and a booklet to help me navigate my first month.
Happy, helpful people, and this was a government office. That is in great contrast to my experiences of getting a driver’s license or paying a vehicle tax in the states.
Oh my, and you wonder why I am here?
